Steimle's Game-Winner Sends No. 5 Washington U. Past No. 20 Brandeis, 2-1

St. Louis, Mo., October 14, 2012 – Junior Lauren Steimle buried a cross from seniorAllie Betley in the 71st minute to break a tie as the No. 5 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer posted a 2-1 victory over No. 20 ranked Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.

The goal for Steimle was her third this season and 17th all-time. All three of Steimle's goals this season have been game winners: Sept. 22 vs. Rhodes (3-0), Sept. 27 vs. Webster (2-0) and Oct. 14 vs. Brandeis (2-1).

With the win, Washington University remained in a tie for first place in the conference standings (3-0-1) with Emory University, who posted a 2-0 win over the University of Rochester at home on Sunday. Brandeis (10-3-1, 1-2-1 UAA) falls into a tie for fifth place in the UAA standings with the loss.

Washington U. outshot Brandeis 21-11 for the game, and had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. WUSTL senior goalkeeper Clara Jaquesmade four saves in the net for Washington U. as she extended her school record win total to 55. Jaques is 11-1-1 this season with a 0.74 goals against average in 1,090 minutes played.

Washington U. had an 11-3 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes of play, and capitalized on one of its first scoring opportunities at the 9:58 mark. A nice give and go from sophomore Lillie Toaspern and juniorBecky Berels ended up on the foot of senior Emily Gosché, who one-timed its past Brandeis goalkeeper Francine Kofinas to make it 1-0.

Six minutes later, junior Kate Doyle nearly made it 2-0 on a free kick that deflected off the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game. Washington U. had three shots on goal in the first half, as opposed to none by Brandeis.

Brandeis' Kelly Peterson tied the game up at 1-1 at the 53:16 mark after she scored on a free kick from 40 yards out that just got over the head of Jaques. She got a hand on the ball just before it slipped into the back of the net. The Judges continued to have the momentum in the second half, posting a 7-3 shots advantage in the opening 15 minutes. After not making a save in the opening half, Jaques had four in the second half to help preserve the victory.

Washington U. (11-1-1) closes out non-conference play with a pair of home games against Principia College on Tuesday, Oct. 16, and Millikin University on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
