Centre women cruise to 4-0 win over Spalding

More news about: Centre women's team

The Centre women's soccer team stayed perfect on the year, extending its winning streak and shutout streak with a 4-0 victory over Spalding on Sunday in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels scored twice on corner kicks in the first 10 minutes and were never truly tested in the game. The first goal came three minutes in when Maddie Slattery(Cincinnati, Ohio) bent a corner kick into the goal off the far post. Just seven minutes later, Centre was up 2-0 when Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) headed in her team-leading seventh goal of the season off another corner kick from Slattery.

Those two goals were more than enough for a Centre defense that was in the process of posting its ninth straight shutout and 11th of the year. The Colonels have now gone a month without surrendering a goal, the last coming in a 2-1 win at Hanover on Sept. 15.

After building the early league, Centre went on to increase it in the 25th minute when Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) dribbled through the left side of the box and beat Spalding goalkeeper Erin Jinna-Watkins. After taking a 3-0 lead to halftime, the Colonels got one last goal in the 58th minute when Annastasia Hicks (Cynthiana, Ky.) got behind the Eagles' defense and fed Mariah Pohl (Winchester, Ky.) for the score.

Centre outshot Spalding 16-6 in the game, putting 10 of those on goal compared with just one for the Eagles. Watkins made six saves for Spalding while Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.), Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) and Kristin White (Lancaster, Ohio) all split time in goal for Centre with Hilton making the lone save.

The victory improves Centre's record to 14-0 on the season while Spalding falls to 8-6. The Colonels return to SAA play next weekend when they travel to Hendrix on Friday and Rhodes on Sunday.
