Beavers Dominate CUNYAC Weekly Awards with Six Earning All-Week Honors

NEW YORK – The City College of New York dominated the CUNYAC weekly awards for the week of Oct. 8-14 as a school record six student-athletes earned all-week honors the City University of New York Athletic Conference announced on Monday.

The women's soccer team (10-2), outscored its opponents 10-0 in two shutout victories, swept the CUNYAC/Applebee's soccer weekly awards as senior Dzindzi Asamoah-Wade, freshman Paola Ramos and junior Lindsay De La Rosa were named player of the week, rookie of the week and defender of the week, respectively.

Asamoah-Wade earned her second player of the week honors this season after scoring three goals and contributing one assist in two games this week. In a 4-0 conference victory over Lehman, the senior had a one goal helping in the shutout effort. Against Brooklyn, Wade scored two goals and assisted on another as the Beavers were victorious 4-0. Her efforts throughout the season have her ranked among the national leaders in goals with 14.

Ramos was named the women's soccer rookie of the week after recording five assists and one goal in the perfect week. The forward has been a key component in CCNY's record breaking season as the Beavers have set singles season school records for wins, shutouts, and goals.

De La Rosa has been named the first ever CUNYAC/Applebee's Women's Soccer Defender of the Week. The award begins this week as CUNYAC looks to highlight the other side of the ball. Due to an injury, De La Rosa played out of position against Brooklyn but that didn't faze this veteran as she contributed to a 4-0 shutout. The defender has played an integral part in CCNY's record breaking pace as they have broken single season school records for wins, shutouts, and goals.

The women's volleyball team (9-16) had a busy week, recording a 4-3 record, highlighted by a sweep in Columbus Day's CUNYAC multi-match against John Jay College and Medgar Evers College. The Beavers swept the CUNYAC/Metro PCS women's volleyball honors as senior Dalliana Toussaint earned player of the week and freshman Aimee Grossman earned rookie of the week.

Toussaint led the Beavers with 89 kills, 85 digs and 12 service aces this week as the captain continues her stellar senior season. Against John Jay, the Beaver compiled 11 kills and 9 digs as CCNY won 3-0. That same day in a 3-0 win over Medgar Evers, the senior compiled seven kills, 10 digs, and three serving aces.

A 3-2 victory over Mount Saint Vincent saw Toussaint rack up 23 more kills and 26 additional assists as she had her first double-double of the week. She recorded her second double-double against WPI accumulating 14 kills and 10 assists. She finished out her week with a third double-double against Sarah Lawrence with 15 kills and 23 digs. The multi-match sweep brought the Beavers to 5-2 in conference play.

Grossman earned rookie of the week honors after compiling 147 assists in seven games this week. The freshman began the week with 19 assists and seven digs against John Jay. In a 3-2 victory over Mount Saint Vincent, the Brooklyn native accumulated 33 assists and 16 digs. She added 23 helpers and seven digs as the Beavers took on WPI. Her most outstanding game of the week came against Sarah Lawrence. In the four set victory, the setter had a career-high 42 assists to help her teammates finish the St. Joseph's Invitational on a positive note.

The men's soccer team (6-6-2) defeated its three opponents this week, all by one goal as the Beavers played in two overtime games. Freshman Jorge Galvez earned CUNYAC/Applebee's Rookie of the Week honors after defeating Berkeley 3-2 and CUNYAC foes CSI 3-2 and Hunter College 1-0 this week.

Against Berkeley, the center back played most of the game as CCNY was victorious 3-2. Garcia followed up that performance in a game against the College of Staten Island as the Beavers won 3-2 in double overtime. He finished out the week in a shutout of Hunter as CCNY won 1-0 in overtime.
