Shutout streak ends, but Centre women stay perfect with 4-1 win at Hendrix
The Centre women's soccer team conceded its first goal in more than a month but had little trouble otherwise in posting a 4-1 victory over Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association game on Friday in Conway, Ark.
When Samantha Lallas of Hendrix scored on an assist from Laurie Waters in the 16th minute to put the Warriors up 1-0, it was the first goal Centre had given up since a Sept. 15 win at Hanover and the first time the Colonels had trailed in a match since the season opener.
Unfazed by the early goal, Centre knotted the score six minutes later on an Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) goal assisted by Liz Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) and was in control the rest of the way.
Just after halftime, the Colonels took the lead for good when Alex Combs (Danville, Ky.) assisted on a Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) goal, then went up 3-1 in the 60th minute when Combs scored an unassisted goal on a shot from the top of the box. Centre later capped the scoring when Brittany Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an assist from Mary Taylor Kersey(Winchester, Ky.) in the 72nd minute.
Centre dominated the statistical categories, outshooting Hendrix 24-6 and holding an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rachel Zweig made six saves in goal for Hendrix while Megan Foley(Louisville, Ky.) and Holly Hilton (New Palestine, Ind.) split time in goal for Centre with Hilton making the lone save.
With the win, the Colonels stay perfect on the year at 15-0, tying a school record for most wins in a season. Hendrix falls to 4-9-1 overall with an 0-4-1 mark in SAA competition. Centre will take a 5-0 SAA record into a trip to Rhodes on Sunday.
