Kenyon Scores Late to Tie Spartan Women, 1-1

CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University women's soccer junior forward Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) scored her third goal of the season in the 56th minute, but a late Kenyon College goal earned the visitors a 1-1 draw on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Case Field. The tie marked the final non-conference match on the Spartans' 2012 schedule.

The Spartans move to 7-4-4 for the season and return to University Athletic Association action on Friday, October 26 versus the University of Chicago (Ill.) at home at 5:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the program will honor its senior student-athletes.

With the tie, Kenyon sits at 6-7-2.

Scoring chances were hard to come by during the opening half of the defensive struggle. Kenyon managed just one shot, while the Spartans failed to record a scoring opportunity.

With the Case offensive pressure turned up following halftime, Bourque put the hosts on the board when she beat Kenyon goalkeeper Lauren Wolfe on a shot from just outside 10 yards. Sophomore forward Christine Straka (Prospect Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) assisted Bourque on the play with a nifty through ball.

However, Kenyon leveled the match via an unassisted goal from Katie Hoener in the 86th minute on a wind-aided shot lobbed over the head of Case freshman goalkeeper Megan Romelfanger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead).

In net, Romelfanger recorded three saves for the Spartans. Wolfe was also credited with three saves as she played both halves and the first overtime period before leaving due to injury. Lisa Poolpol replaced Wolfe for the second overtime and tallied one stop.

Statistically, both teams fired 12 shots for the match, while Case Western Reserve held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
