Lillie Toaspern Scores Pair of Goals in Washington U.'s 2-1 OT Win at Rochester
Rochester, N.Y., October 26, 2012 – Sophomore Lillie Toaspern scored a pair of goals for the No. 5 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team in a 2-1 overtime win at the University of Rochester on Friday night in Rochester, N.Y.
Toaspern's effort pushed Washington U. into sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 4-0-1 record with two conference games remaining. Top-ranked Emory University (11-0-5, 3-0-2 UAA) posted a 0-0 double overtime draw at Brandeis University on Friday, and now sits two points behind the Bears in the UAA standings.
Its took Toaspern just 2:06 into the first overtime to send the Bears to their fifth-straight victory. She now has seven goals this season, and upped her career tally to 19 goals in two seasons. Freshman Olivia Lillegraven recorded her team-leading sixth assist on the game-winner by Toaspern.
Washington U. outshot Rochester 18-3 in the game and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Clara Jaques picked up the win in goal making one save.
Kate Sappio gave Rochester the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute off a double assist from Christine Kecke and Alaina Wayland. A cross was sent in the box that found the net off a double header. Despite trailing at half, Washington U. had a 4-3 shot advantage.
Washington U. trailed most of the second half and continued to put the pressure on the Yellowjackets. The Bears finally tied it up at 75:21 when Toaspern scored from 15 yards out after gathering a lose ball in the box. Junior Jen Reed and freshman Abby Starker were credited with the assist on Toaspern's goal.
Washington U. (14-1-1) plays its final road game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio. Case was defeated at home by the University of Chicago 6-0 on Friday.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Rochester, 12-10-2, and has not lost to the Yellowjackets since 2005 … The victory for head coach Jim Conlon was his 75th in five seasons at Washington University.
