No. 4 Washington U. Celebrates Senior Day With 2-1 Win Over Chicago

St. Louis, Mo., November 3, 2012 – The No. 4 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-1 victory over the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.

Prior to the contest, Washington U. honored its nine seniors who played their final regular season home game on Saturday: Allie BetleyLauren ClatchEmily Gosché,Caitlin HeimClara JaquesNicole Martin,Jodi RosenzweigMurphy Stanley andHilary Stepansky. The Class of 2013 has compiled an overall record of 62-18-6 (.756) in four seasons on the Danforth Campus.

Washington U., who claimed its ninth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and earned the league's automatic bid, finished the regular season with a 16-1-1 record and a 6-0-1 mark in the UAA. The 16 wins in the regular season tie for the most in school history. The school record for wins in a single season is 18, set in 2011.

Washington U. had the 7-4 shot advantage in the opening half, and found the back of the net just before halftime. Junior Jessica Johnsondeflected a shot from senior Lauren Clatch into the goal at the 40:52 mark to make it 1-0. The goal for Johnson was her third of the season and 12th of her career.

Sophomore Kaylin Balley chipped the Chicago goalkeeper to the far post to give the Bears the 2-0 lead in the 74th minute. The goal for Balley was the second of her career. Chicago trimmed the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 79th minute from Julia Ozella, but Washington U. would hold on for the lead after a late flurry by the Maroons.

Jaques made one save in 75 minutes played, and picked up her school-record 60th win of her career. The save by Jaques came in the 57th minute when she came out of the box and got a hand on a shot by Brigette Kragie. Heim (11 minutes) and Stepansky (four minutes) also saw time in goal for Washington U. in the victory. Washington University outshot Chicago 11-9 and had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
