No. 3 Washington U. Moves into NCAA Second Round With 3-0 Victory Over Transylvania
St. Louis, Mo., November 10, 2012 — No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis broke open a scoreless tie at halftime with three second-half goals as the Bears posted a 3-0 win over Transylvania University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.
Washington University improves its overall record to 17-1-1, and advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight season. The 17 wins are the second most in school history. Transylvania, who earned the automatic bid as the champion of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC), finished its season with a 11-6-3 record.
Washington U. takes on No. 16 ranked Thomas More College in the second round on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Bear Sports Network. Thomas More posted a 1-0 win over No. 18 Augustana College in the second game on Saturday at Francis Field. Abby Gindling scored the lone goal of the game for Thomas More at the 65:15 mark after firing a shot from 40 yards out that snuck into the near corner. 
"We had a multiple goal shutout, got some contributions from some different kids, and hopefully we can bounce back and be ready for tomorrow," said Washington University head coach Jim Conlon. "We told the girls to settle down at halftime and play your soccer. This is not your first game played on our W [Francis Field] at home, let's come in here and play. I think we were a little hyped up for the NCAA tournament and we just needed to settle in and play a little bit."
Sophomore Anna Zambricki brought the much-needed intensity early in the second half, and it resulted in a goal in the 57th minute after her shot from 25 yards out snuck over the head of Transylvania goalkeeper Jerrica Stovel. Freshman Abby Starker was credited with the assist on the goal for Zambricki, her team-leading 13th of the season.
Washington U. pushed the lead to 2-0 just two and a half minute later after junior Jen Reed headed home a corner kick from classmate Kate Doyle. The assist for Doyle was her team-leading sixth of the season. Freshman Anna Sippel rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 70th minute. 
Washington University outshot Transylvania 36-6 for the game, and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Jaques made one save in 75 minutes played to pick up her 17th win of the season, second most in a single-season. Senior Caitlin Heim played the final 15 minutes in goal for Washington U. Stovel made 11 saves in the season-ending loss for Transylvania.
Washington U. had a 17-2 shot advantage in the first half, with three shots going off the post or cross bar. The Bears had a golden opportunity at the 15:12 mark by Zambricki when her shot went of the crossbar. Just six minutes later, Alyssa Kruse nearly gave Transylvania the lead after a misplay by the back line. A ball was sent in the WUSTL half of the field that went over the head of senior back Nicole Martin. Senior goalkeeper Clara Jaques came off her line to make a save that kept the score at 0-0.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. is 20-10-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, while Transylvania is 0-4 … Zambricki moved into a tie for eighth place on the all-time goal scored list with 23 … The game-winning goal was the 10th of her career, 10th most in school history.
