Women's soccer advances in NCAA Tournament with a 7-0 victory against UW-Whitewater
Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team defeated UW-Whitewater 7-0 on Saturday night in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. Wheaton (19-3-2) advances to the Sectional Semifinal round of the tournament next Friday against Trinity University (Texas) or Hardin-Simmons at a site that will be announced by the NCAA on Monday. UW-Whitewater ends its season with a record of 16-5-1.
The seven goals scored by Wheaton in tonight's victory is tied for the most-ever by the Thunder in its previous 56 NCAA Tournament matches. The seven-goal margin of victory is the most ever in the program's history in a NCAA Tournament match.
Senior Laura Karsten moved Wheaton's lead to 4-0 in the 28th minute when she scored on a low shot past UWW goalkeeper Jordan Myers. DeMoss registered her second goal of the night in the 31st minute, thanks to an Ally Witt assist for a 5-0 lead. Witt scored in the 38th minute when she headed the ball into the goal off of a Sydney Sharkey cross.
Wheaton led the Warhawks 6-0 at halftime. Witt scored her second goal of the night in the 53rd minute to increase the hosts' lead to 7-0. Witt netted the final goal of the match off of a Lindsay Johnson assist.
Wheaton out-shot the Warhawks 19-12, with a 14-7 edge in shots on goal for the hosts. Wheaton goalkeeper Hilary Barreto made five saves in the Thunder net to record her fifth shutout of the year. Myers made five saves in 45 minutes of work for the Warhawks and Emily Haeger worked 45 minutes, making two saves.
