No. 7 Centre falls to No. 16 Emory in second round of NCAA Tournament

More news about: Centre women's team

In a rematch of last year's second round match, the Centre College women's soccer team fell by the same 2-0 score to Emory University in this year's second round contest of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament Sunday, Nov. 11 in Danville, Ky.

Just like last year's match in Atlanta, the Eagles scored a goal in each period. Charlotte Butker scored the first goal off a rebound of a corner kick at the 16:58 mark in the first period for a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after that goal, a high shot by Centre was deflected by Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein. The ball bounced around and was finally secured by Stein with the referee ruling the ball did not cross the goal line.

The two teams went into the half with the score 1-0, but Kelly Costopoulos scored at the 62:47 mark in the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. Emory's defense held the remainder of the match, and the Eagles finished with their second 2-0 win in as many nights after defeating DePauw 2-0 one night before.

The match was evenly played as both teams got off 14 shots each and had four corner kicks apiece. Junior Megan Foley (Louisville, Ky.) took the loss in goal for Centre. Foley stopped eight of the 10 shots she faced on the night. The match was only the second time all season the Colonels allowed more than one goal. The other was a 2-1 loss to Rhodes in double overtime.

Emory is now 13-1-6 overall, and will advance to the third round next weekend, while the loss ends one of the most successful seasons in Centre women's soccer history. The team finished with a school best 20-2 record, an SAA Regular Season and Tournament Championships, and its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
