WAU buries game-winner in second half to beat Gallaudet
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's soccer team fell to non-conference foe Washington Adventist University Wednesday night in a physical contest at Hotchkiss Field. Shock foward Danielle Panuccio buried the eventual game-winning goal mere seconds into the second half and the Bison were unable to overcome the two-goal deficit as they lost 2-1.
The Shock (3-4) took the second half's opening kick and immediately worked the ball deep into Gallaudet territory as Panuccio dribbled into the left side of the goalie box. The senior from Mechanicsville, Pa., quickly fired a shot to the right side of the net and buried it past a diving Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) to extend the WAU lead to 2-0 only 28 seconds after halftime.
The Bison (1-5) could only muster two shots on goal in the second half, one of which they buried on a beautiful play in the game's 72nd minute. Freshman Megan Calik (Conyers, Ga.) started the scoring play as she came up from her defensive position to take a Gallaudet corner kick. She crossed the ball deep in the Washington Adventist goalie box where Monique Balcarcel (Lansing, Mich.) was waiting. The junior midfielder outjumped several Shock defenders and headed the ball past goalkeeper Taylor Noel (10 saves) and into the back of the net to get the Bison within a goal.
