Newbury names Viana women's soccer coach
Director of Athletics Jessica Gould announced the hiring of Giovanni Viana as Head Women's Soccer Coach, Monday afternoon. Viana brings a wealth of in-depth soccer knowledge at all levels, youth to professional, to Newbury.
Familiar with collegiate soccer in the Greater Boston area after serving as an assistant coach at nearby Lasell College, the Chestnut Hill resident spent the past fall at Division I Brookline High School. Viana helped strengthen the Warriors' player development program by leading the Warriors boys' junior varsity team to a 13-2-1 record in 2012.
As an assistant men's soccer coach at Lasell, Viana assisted coach Giovanni Pacini with on-field training and recruitment of international and junior college players. In 2011, he helped guide the Lasers to the GNAC postseason, claiming the fifth seed with 5-3-2 conference record and 9-6-3 overall record.
Prior to Lasell, Viana served as Head Coach of the Beaver Country Day School girls' varsity team. In his first year at the helm, he took the Beavers from a last place team to the Eastern Independent League (EIL) finals. In addition to teaching the technical and tactical aspects of soccer, he also managed and coordinated training activities with six assistant coaches for the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School programs.
Viana also has a plethora of international coaching experience serving as an assistant coach with Brazil's Canto do Rio Futebol Clube as well as the Serrano Futebol Clube. Most recently he shadowed the Head Coach of the FIFA World Champion and six time Brazilian National Champion, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.
Holding United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Class D license, Viana also has been actively involved at the youth level in Boston. As a Head Coach of the Brookline Soccer Club, he led the U14 and U11 Girls to section titles in the spring of 2011 and 2012, respectively, as well as U14 and U11 championships in the Spring 2012 and Fall 2012, respectively.
Viana currently resides in Chestnut Hill with his wife Carolina and two young daughters, Sofia and Isabela.
