Weiler makes long trip from Moorhead to CNU
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport interim director of
athletics Jon Waters has announced the hiring of Dan
Weiler as the new head women's soccer coach. Weiler comes to
CNU from Concordia-Moorhead after guiding his squad to the NCAA
Tournament in six of the last seven seasons.
"We are thrilled to have Dan Weiler join the CNU community and
take the helm of our women's soccer program," Waters said. "Coach
Weiler has extensive successful experiences developing
student-athletes on the field, in the classroom and in the
community."
Weiler joins the Captains after 11 seasons as head coach with
Concordia, building the program into a regional powerhouse and
consistent national threat. The Cobbers reached the Sweet 16 round
of the NCAA Tournament in three of their six appearances, all
coming under Weiler's guidance over the past seven years.
"I want to personally thank Jon Waters and the search committee
for giving me the opportunity to join the athletic staff of CNU, "
said Weiler. "With my first steps on CNU's beautiful campus, I felt
completely comfortable and welcome by students and staff. CNU
women's soccer has tremendous potential and I'm excited to start
working with the student-athletes."
Kevin Roos, head girls' soccer coach at Fargo (N.D.) Shanley High School, replaces Weiler as head coach at Concordia-Moorhead.
Weiler has twice been selected as the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) Region Coach of the Year (2009 &
2012) and is a four-time Conference Coach of the Year. He compiled
an impressive record of 144-58-24 while at the helm for the
Cobbers, a winning percentage of over 69%. Since 2007, the team has
won 77% of their games, going 98-23-18.
He has coached players to 30 NSCAA All-Region honors and five
All-American nods. Off the field, his team has earned the NSCAA
Team Academic Award every year, coached 37 Academic All-Conference
players, 4 Scholar All-Americans, and 2 ESPN Academic
All-Americans.
His 14-year coaching résumé at Concordia
includes two seasons as an Associate Coach for both the men's and
women's teams before taking over as the head coach for the women's
team in 2001. For a span of five seasons (2007-11), Weiler also
took the reins of the men's team, turning around a 3-win squad in
2007 to a 13-win program in 2010.
Weiler was also the head girls' soccer coach at Fargo South High
School from 1999-2006, guiding the Bruins to a state championship
in 1999. He earned North Dakota Coach of the Year honors in 1999,
and in 2002, was named a finalist for the national girl's high
school coach of the year.
Weiler holds a Brazilian (BRUSA) "A" coaching license and a United
States Soccer Federation (USSF) "B" license.
A Fargo, N.D. native, Weiler graduated Magna Cum Laude from
Moorhead State University in 1996.
The Captains are coming off a 12-9 season with an overtime loss in
the USA South Championship Game, narrowly missing their third NCAA
appearance in four years. CNU was led by a pair of returning
All-State players, including all-time leading scorer Emma O'Reilly.
The Springfield, Va. native tied the CNU career goals scored mark
in just her third year with her 37th career goal in
the final game of the year. Defender Alexis Stahlman was the other
All-State performer, a sweeper that helped CNU post 10 shutouts in
2012.
