Pioneers battle in loss to Knights
LEXINGTON, Ky.-- Transylvania University's women's soccer team battled in their first exhibition of the season Tuesday night, falling 0-8 to the Bellarmine Knights.
The Pioneers received little defensive relief in the first half. A short bobble by junior Pioneer goalkeeper Jerrica Scovel at the 10-minute mark allowed the first goal of the match by junior Knight midfielder Emily Hollander.
Four minutes later, a lobbed ball by freshman forward Mary Beth Gorham beat the outstretched arms of Scovel to put Bellarmine up 2-0. Knight midfielder Maura Gorman netted a third goal just minutes later on a deflected shot attempt by teammate Gorham.
The Knights attacked Transylvania goalkeepers junior Jerrica Scovel and freshman Morgan Potts most of the night, facing a combined 31 shots and making total eight saves.
Senior defender Anne Marie Dumaine led the way for the Pioneer offense, attempting two shots while freshman midfielder Cora Kerber, sophomore forward Erin Marek, senior midfielder Kelsey Meece, and senior defender Dani Kane, each notched one.
The Knights closed out the second half with five goals, outshooting the Pioneers 31-to-6, 18 alone in the final 45 minutes of play.
The Pioneers return to the pitch for their first regular season game on Friday, Aug. 30 as they face Case Western at the Centre College Showcase in Danville, Ky. at 7:30 p.m.
