Win is worth the wait for Berry women's soccer

More news about: Berry women's team

After waiting all year for the opening of the 2013-14 season, the Berry women's soccer team waited out two lightning delays en route to a 3-0 win over Covenant on Friday.

Lightning forced a thirty minute delay, but the Lady Vikings maintained their focus and began a terrific offensive first half with goals from freshmen Maggie Midkiff and sophomore Sara Dillon.

Thirty-four minutes into the first half lightning again returned and delayed the game for another hour before the first half resumed.

The delay had no effect on Berry as senior midfielder Kim Fischer scored before the first half ended to give Berry a 3-0 lead at half time. That score would hold up as the final in the victory versus the Scots.

Sophomore transfer Tessa Piety and senior Molly Johnson each had one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Sanchez received the win for Berry while Hannah Bales (three saves, two goals allowed) took the loss for the Scots.

The Vikings outshot the Scots 26-2.

"Our midfielders were a key to the succes," said Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "The team kept focused during the delay. The team has been ready since preseason to perform, so they were ready from start to finish in this game."

The Lady Vikings return to Ford Field tomorrow at 5 p.m. to take on Piedmont College
