Seahawk Women's Soccer Advances to Title Game on PKs
St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team will have the opportunity to play in their own Seahawk Invitational championship game after edging Rutgers University-Newark, 4-3, in penalty kicks Friday afternoon.
St. Mary's (0-0-1) will take on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (1-0), a 2-0 winner over Randolph-Macon College, in tomorrow's title game at 2:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark (0-0-1) will take on Randolph-Macon in the battle for third at 12:00 pm.
St. Mary's and Rutgers-Newark played 110 minutes of scoreless action before heading into the penalty shootout. Senior Renae McEvoy (Denville, N.J.) gave her Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 advantage in the shootout as senior captain Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) missed high for St. Mary's.
Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) then turned away sophomore midfielder Cristina Estremera's (East Brunswick, N.J.) attempt before senior captain Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) put the ball into the lower left corner to make it 1-1 in the shootout.
Rutgers-Newark and the Seahawks each made their next two shots to keep it equal at 3-3 heading into their fifth and final attempts. Senior defender Alexis Sutton (Bedminster, N.J.) overshot the goal, allowing senior midfielder Marilyn Hucek's (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) make to send St. Mary's to the title game.
The Seahawks dominated the game with a 21-8 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at one apiece.
Wirtz finished the game with four saves for her 14th career shutout while first-year Diana Aviles (Bloomfield, N.J.) picked up her first career clean sheet with eight stops.
