Women’s Soccer moves past Johnson & Wales in home opener

More news about: Roger Williams women's team

BRISTOL, R.I. – The #18-ranked Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team notched a convincing 6-1 win over Johnson & Wales University Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

The Hawks began the game with a quick goal in the second minute. Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) chipped a pass over the Wildcat defense to Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) who was making her way up the middle. Noel was able to knock a short chip of her own over the keeper to give the Hawks a quick 1-0 lead.

Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) added to the Hawk lead at the 18:11 mark, taking a nice pass up the middle from Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) and putting a shot into the right corner for a 2-0 Hawk lead.

Lydon added another shortly into the second half to put RWU on top by three. In the 47th minute, Julie Loewenstein (Malta, N.Y.) fed Lydon a pass to the right side in the box. Lydon then put a couple of moves on a Wildcat defender to get past and fire a goal to the right side.

Lydon would later aid in the Hawks ensuing score, shooting a pass up the middle to a streaking Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.). Kaiser fired a shot that bounced off the right post, but took a fortunate bounce back to the middle. She was then able to recover and put the shot in for her first score of the year at the 51:10 mark.

The Wildcats were able to get on the board in the 72nd minute, with Alyson Marsden putting a long chip into the upper left corner from just inside the box. Marsden's score was her first of the year.

The Hawks would later tack on two more scores, beginning with Isabelle Lefebvre (Los Altos, Calif.) shooting in a putback off of a Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) shot in the 80th minute. Lydon then completed the hat trick in the 86th minute, taking a pass from Darby Rawcliff (Portland, Maine) and using strong footwork to get around a Wildcat and score.

Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) notched the win for the Hawks, making six saves on the night. Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) took the loss, stopping seven shots on the night.

Roger Williams (2-0-0) heads to Mass. on Friday to take part in the Springfield Invitational, where they will face Westfield State. Johnson & Wales (0-1-1) hosts Nichols on Saturday.
