Tayler Mazurski Scores Twice in 3-1 Western New England Win Against Plymouth State

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Tayler Mazurski scored two goals, freshman Brionna Voight added three points, and goalkeeper Casey Magee chalked up her first career win in her first collegiate start as Western New England earned a 3-1 victory Sunday over visiting Plymouth State in non-conference women's soccer action at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears improve to 3-1 while the Panthers were playing in their season opener.

The Golden Bears struck quickly with two goals from Mazurski just 3 minutes and 27 seconds apart. In the 12th minute, Voight sent a thru-ball from midfield over the top of the PSU defense and Mazurski ran onto the ball to rifle a shot into the net for a 1-0 WNE lead. Then in the 15th minute, Mazurski deked a defender after taking a pass from Karoline Sperber and blasted a shot that glanced off the crossbar as the ball landed past the goal line. Western New England led 2-0 at intermission.

Magee lost her shutout bid in the 48th minute when Laura Davis scored on a rebound shot originally from Carol Messler that Magee couldn't handle and Davis calmly knocked in the goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But the Golden Bears turned the tables on getting a soft goal of their own in the 60th minute, when Voight's corner kick attempt deflected off a Panthers' player into the net. Voight was credited with her second goal of the season.

Plymouth State had a goal disallowed due to an offside infraction in the 51st minute.

The WNE offense put constant pressure on the Panthers, who were outshot by an 18 to 6 margin. The Golden Bears' aggressiveness led to six offside calls, and the midfielders and defenders served many thru-balls to their strikers.

Annaliese Schmidt made five saves in the Panthers' goal while Voight had one.

Western New England returns to action on Tuesday (7 p.m.) at cross-town foe Springfield in a non-league contest.
