Ephs fall to Trinity 2-0
HARTFORD, CT – The Williams women's soccer team fell to the Trinity Bantams (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) today 2-0. The Bantams scored both goals in the second half to hand the Ephs (1-1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) their first loss of the year.
The Ephs looked strong in the first half as they outshot Trinity eight to four. Alison Magruder tried to get things going for the Ephs as she had three nice looks at the net, but her chances all fell wide. The Ephs' only real test of Bantam goalie Monica DiFiori came with just over three minutes to play in the opening frame. First-year Gabz Amos-Grosser put her shot on goal, but DiFiori scooped up the save to keep the game scoreless. None of the Bantams' first-half opportunities were on net.
Despite the Ephs' attempt to bounce back, the Bantams struck again just under six minutes later. Andi Nicholson sent a pretty pass to Abbey Lake, who put the ball in the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. While the Ephs fought until the end, they had no more shots on goal in the remaining time.
Van Wetter had two saves for the Ephs in today's matchup, while DiFiori turned away all four of the Ephs' opportunities for the Trinity shutout. The Ephs outshot the Bantams by a total of 16-12, but they had an even number of looks in the second half with eight apiece.
After the game, Eph head coach Michelyne Pinard commented on the Ephs' inability to finish as a factor in the loss. "[Trinity's] a very good team. They're a very solid team all around. I thought we started slow, but we really had chances in both halves that we didn't finish. They probably had two or three chances, and they finished two of them. This game at the end of the day is really about finishing chances, and they did that, and we didn't."
The Ephs return to the field tomorrow to play Oneonta State at 12 PM. The game will be their first home matchup of the year.
