Wheaton Tops Vikings 3-0
Salem, MA -- The Lyons of Wheaton College defeated Salem State 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. Gabriella Verde (Miami, FL) scored two second period goals to help Wheaton improve to 3-2-1 on the year. The Vikings remain winless at 0-2-1.
The first half saw limited scoring chances for both sides. However, Wheaton took advantage at the 32:27mark when Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, NJ) took a pass from Kristina Braga (Lowell, MA) to give the Lyons the lead. Salem State's Rachel Ledbetter (Dracut, MA) kept the deficit to within a goal when she made an impressive save right before the half.
In a tightly played second half, the Vikings could not convert on multiple scoring chances. The game remained in doubt until the 81st minute when Gabriella Verde (Miami, FL) rocketed a penalty kick into the top right corner of the net that gave the Lyons a two-goal cushion. Verde added another goal in the 89th minute to make the final 3-0.
The Vikings Ledbetter had three saves, and Ali Hinton (Lafayette, CO) stopped two shots for the Colonials. Lauren Thacker (Brunswick, ME) replaced Hinton late in the game and recorded a save.
