Salem State Dispatches Trailblazers 2-1
Salem, MA -- Casey Connolly (Nahant, MA ) scored in the 60th minute to break and 1-1 tie, to propel the Vikings of Salem State to a 2-1 victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Trailblazers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The win raises the Vikings record to 4-2-1, and 2-0 in the MASCAC while MCLA slips to 4-5, and 0-2 in conference.
The Trailblazers got on the board first when Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, MA) headed in a corner kick by Kayla Lingel (South Glenn Falls, NY). However, with less than a minute in the half, Salem State's Victoria Clancy (Dorchester, MA) looped a kick from the top of the box that bounced over the goalie's head to make it 1-1.
The second half was dominated by Salem State's defense as the Trailblazers did not attempt one shot on goal in the period. MCLA escaped several near misses until Allison Celia (Hopkinton, MA) fed Connolly, who gave the Vikings the lead when her sliding kick found the back of the net. The rest of the half was a game of possession that Salem State controlled, ending up with a 16-1 advantage in shots.
The Vikings Rachel Ledbetter (Dracut, MA) was not credited with a save while the Trailblazers Kathryn Daly (South Cairo, NY) stopped six shots.
Salem State will play at Framingham State next Saturday at 2:00 PM, and MCLA will travel to Mount Holyoke on Tuesday for a game at 6:00 PM.
