Danielle Savoie of Western New England Nets CCC Defensive Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University sophomore Danielle Savoie (Cathedral High School) has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This signals the first such honor of her career.

The back from right here in Springfield led the Golden Bear defense to a 1-0-1 record on the week including a conference win. Savoie cleared two shots off the goal line to help shut out Endicott on the road, 1-0 on Saturday, and snap an eight-game losing streak to the Gulls that dated to 2007. The Golden Bear defense held tough earlier in the week to keep visiting Wellesley off the scoresheet in a 0-0 draw on Tuesday.

Undecided in her major, Savoie has helped a defensive unit that hasn't yielded a goal for the last 401 minutes--a span of five games, which is part of a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) for the Golden Bears. The team also ranks tied for second in the CCC with a 0.80 goals-against average.

Western New England (7-3-2 overall) is now 2-1-1 in CCC play, already matching its win total in the conference from a year ago.
