Ullman’s goal lifts CMS over Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC semifinals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior midfielder Shaundra Ullman could not have picked a better time to score her first goal of the season. Ullman scored the game-winning goal for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team in a 1-0 win over No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer in the semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Women's Soccer Tournament at Pomona-Pitzer's soccer field on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, CMS advances to the postseason tournament final and will face the winner of the other semifinal match which pits top-seeded Cal Lutheran against No. 4 seed Chapman. The final will be on Saturday at the highest remaining seed at a time yet to be determined.

This is the Athenas first time back in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament finals since 2009 after three-straight, overtime penalty kick losses in the semifinals from 2010-2012.

Ullman's goal for CMS (9-8-3) came in the second half in the 54th minute. She intercepted an errant pass from Pomona-Pitzer's goalie and snuck the ball just inside the right post for the game-winner.

Later in the second half, CMS turned away a few Pomona-Pitzer (13-4-1) scoring opportunities including a ball that Pomona-Pitzer crossed and CMS senior goalie Hannah Dunham knocked away. Dunham had three saves for the Athenas.

CMS outshot Pomona-Pitzer 7-6 in the game as all seven shots for CMS came from different players, while the defense held Pomona-Pitzer's Allie Tao, the SCIAC's third-leading goal scorer, to just one shot on the afternoon.
