Ken Nuber Named Head Soccer Coach at Saint Mary’s (Ind.)

Saint Mary's College Athletics

March 17, 2015 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—The Saint Mary’s College Department of Athletics and Recreation has announced that Ken Nuber joins the College as the head coach of the varsity soccer program. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Nuber brings a wealth of experience and success as he becomes the thirteenth coach of the soccer program at Saint Mary’s.
The current director of coaching for the Junior Irish Soccer Club, Nuber has 19 years of combined coaching experience in the sport at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) and the University of Notre Dame.

Nuber became men’s head coach at Saint Francis in 1994, and coached both the men’s and women’s coach simultaneously until 1998, and continued to coach the women’s team until 2007. Over the 18 seasons in the 14 years Nuber spent with both teams, the Cougars won more than 200 games. The women’s team had 12 consecutive winning seasons with at least 10 wins each of those 12 years. Nuber was named the Mid-Central Conference Coach of the Year twice and was given the nod as regional coach of the year twice. His players won 34 NAIA Scholar-Athlete All-America honors, and the Cougars earned 10 consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards.

Nuber went on to spend five highly successful seasons as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame from 2008-2012. The Fighting Irish went a combined 94-21-8 while Nuber was with the team. Notre Dame won three BIG EAST regular season championships, two BIG EAST tournament titles, and made the NCAA Tournament in each of the five seasons he was an assistant. The Fighting Irish were national runners up in 2008, made it to the final four in 2009, and won the NCAA Division I Championship in 2010. Also in his tenure as assistant coach, Nuber worked with 10 All-Americans, a two-time MAC Herman Trophy winner, and several future professional soccer players during his time with the Fighting Irish.

He currently holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License as well as both the NSCAA National and Advanced National Diploma.

Nuber is a 1993 graduate of Saint Francis and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with an area of concentration in business. As a player for the Cougars, he amassed over 100 career points with 43 goals and 17 assists. He led the team in goals in three of his playing seasons and still holds a share of the program’s individual game record for goals in a single game.

Nuber will continue in his role as the director of coaching with the Junior Irish Soccer Club while beginning his role as head coach of the Saint Mary’s soccer program immediately.
