Rochester Defeats Keuka, 4-0, in Home Opener
PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester launched its home season in terrific fashion on Wednesday evening with a 4-0 victory over Keuka College at Edwin Fauver Stadium. The Yellowjackets boosted their record to 2-1 overall. Keuka is 0-3.
First-year Madison Drenowatz scored two goals and assisted on another. Sophomore Carolyn Richards netted one goal and assisted on one goal. The fourth Rochester goal came from senior Emily Henry.
Seniors Jorie Freitag and Jamison Seabury recorded assists along with sophomore Maeve Bostley.
In goal, sophomore Emma Schechter had four saves – all in the first half. Keuka College's Jessica Pegg, a Rochester native, had seven saves, a number of them outstanding to keep the Yellowjackets at 4-0.
Each goalie made two great saves in the first half – which ended with Rochester ahead, 2-0. The Yellowjackets went ahead in the seventh minute. Bostley pushed forward to get to a loose ball and chipped it ahead to Drenowatz who got behind the defense. As Pegg charged out, Drenowatz pushed it past her into the yawning mouth of goal for a 1-0 lead
In the next three minutes, each goalie made a clutch save to keep it at 1-0. Richards hit a hard blast from right wing that Pegg parried. A minute later, Keuka's Emily McGuigan fired from the top of the penalty area only to see Schechter turn it away.
Near the half's mid-point, Rochester used a three-person combination to produce the second goal for Drenowatz. Richards carried the ball down the right sideline, then pushed a pass through the box to Seabury on the left side of the area. Seabury sent it further towards the middle where Drenowatz was there to take advantage.
Drenowatz set up Richards on the half-hour but Pegg's point blank save kept the ball out of the net. McGuigan broke through the Yellowjacket defense in the final 10 minutes of the half. Her shot in a 1v1 situation vs. Schechter was saved on a fingertip save.
The Yellowjackets broke it open with goals two minutes apart in the first five minutes of the second half. Richards scored her first goal of the season in the 48th minute. Freitag got into the middle, pushed the ball to the right side, and Richards connected from 16 yards out. Two minutes later, Drenowatz headed a shot into the left post. Henry was there to tap in the rebound.
Pegg made three more top saves in the second half. She denied Seabury midway through the period, then made a point blank save of a shot from Sophie Wolf in the 76th minute, and denied Wolf one more time, this one in the 82nd minute.
