More news about: Stevens men's team

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 9, 2011) – Despite a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team fell to SUNY Brockport in double overtime on Friday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex by a 2-1 final. Junior Brian Duffy (Hilton, N.Y.) was able to head in a pass from freshman Max Egan (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 104th minute for the win. Junior forward Victor Daza (North Plainfield, N.J.) tallied the Stevens goal with 9:57 to play in the first half.

The first strong chance of the game went to Stevens (1-2-0) following a Brockport foul on the right side, 35 yards away. Senior back Tarik Kramcha (Denver, Colo.) ripped the ensuing free kick on goal, but Eagle keeper Kyle Sauln (Rochester, N.Y.) lunged to his left to make the save. The rebound bounced around the box before sophomore midfielder Edward Rupp (Sayville, N.Y.) gained control and put a shot on net that Sauln stopped again.

The Ducks scored with 9:57 on the clock to take a 1-0 lead. Daza gained control and held five yards outside the top-left corner of the 18-yard box before lacing a shot on goal. The strike deflected up and over Sauln into the top-right corner for the tally which was his first of the season.

The Ducks, who controlled more than 70 percent of possession in the first half, finished the opening 45 with a 9-1 edge in shots, 4-2 advantage in corners, and a 1-0 lead.

Stevens dominated the ball and field position for most of the second half, taking nine more shots and four more corners, but the Ducks were unable to extend their lead and Brockport took advantage on the second of two quality chances in the second half.

In the 77th minute, Brockport turned Stevens over 45 yards away in the middle of the field and quickly broke out on a 3-on-2. Senior midfielder Jeff Wild (Rochester, N.Y.) received a pass at the top of the box and threaded-the-needle to sophomore midfielder Bobby Ross (Grand Island, N.Y.) on the right side of the box. Ross touched once and sent his shot back across the mouth of the goal and into the lower-left corner for the equalizer.

Neither team generated any great chances in the waning minutes of regulation and the first overtime, but the Eagles were able to tally 3:08 into the second extra period. After a long ball was sent into the box, Egan was able to get his head on the bouncing ball and direct it to Duffy who then headed it over Duck goalkeeper Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) for the game-winner.

Stevens ended the game with a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in corners. Killian was credited with one save in the loss while Sauln stopped five Duck shots.

The Ducks will return to action on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the final game of the Stevens College Cup against 13th-ranked Roanoke College. Brockport will face Kean University at 5 p.m. Roanoke defeated Kean in an exciting match to open the College Cup by a 3-2 final on Friday evening.
