Midwest News & Roundup - Week 4

Welcome to the Midwest News & Review. I will highlight women's NCAA D3 soccer games in the Midwest area. National importance will by followed by regional importance and towards the end of the season conference considerations will crop up. Time is limited so I exercise judgement on notable games to report each week. My editors make me look good; thank you.

Week 4 Notes

Head coach Jim Conlon of Washington U. picked up career win number 400 this week as a men's and women's college coach and is three wins shy of 200 at Washington U.

NORTH REGION

And then there was 1 unbeaten team out of 50 in the North Region after four weeks. Bethel 6-0-0 has had two 1-0 wins over UW-Stout and Carleton. They have a date with #8 St. Thomas in a couple weeks.

#8 St. Thomas 5-1-0

The Tommies went 1-1 this week. They lost to Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 in a game where they were outshot 15-11 and it kept the Titans slim NCAA tournament hopes alive. They bounced back with a victory over Carthage 5-1.

#22 Wartburg 6-1-1

The Knights had a tough week with a draw and a loss. They tied UW-La Crosse 0-0 outshooting them 20-14 and had a 7-3 advantage on corners. They then lost to UW-Stevens Point 2-1 on an 89th minute goal by the Pointers to snatch the victory. They travel to an unbeaten Simpson team on September 28 in a game to watch.

#32 Loras 5-3-0

The Duhawks lost their game this week against #5 Wheaton 3-0. Loras hung around after an early Wheaton goal, but two more in the 74th and 78th minutes put the game away.

UW-Stevens Point 6-1-2

The Pointers tied their opening game of the week and then beat Wartburg 2-1 and Dubuque 1-0. They play Illinois Wesleyan next Saturday and Loras on Sunday. It is a tough weekend, but both games are at home.

Dubuque 6-2-0

The Spartans started their three game week with two wins, but fell in the third game to UW-Stephens Point 1-0 giving up a 4th minute goal that held up in a fairly even game.

St. Olaf 5-1-1

The Oles have an interesting resume so far with a draw against UW-Stevens Point and a loss to Pacific Lutheran. They play at St. Thomas on September 28 in a game to see how serious a threat they are this year - they upset the Tommies 1-0 last year.

A quick shout to the remaining unbeaten team - Simpson 5-0-3. They play Wartburg on September 28 in a game to watch.

GREAT LAKES REGION

CENTRAL REGION

You guessed it, 1 unbeaten team out of 44 in the Central Region after four weeks. Concordia (WI) 5-0-0 has a close win 2-1 over UW-La Crosse, but does play UW-Whitewater, who is down this year, on September 29.

#5 Wheaton (Ill.) 7-1-0

The Thunder had a big test this week traveling to Washington U. They lost 2-1 in double over time and were outshot 25-4. They bounced back by swatting Loras 3-0. This week they play at Chicago on September 24 at 5pm in the game to watch in the region.

#9 Washington U. 7-1-1

The Bears dominated Wheaton, despite the 2-1 win in overtime, to make the push for hosting and seeding position in the NCAA tournament.

#20 Chicago 5-1-0

The Maroons held off local hopeful North Central (IL) 2-1 with a 14-4 shot advantage and beat Kalamazoo 3-1 in a game that had three goals in the final 14 minutes of action. They have a test this week on Wednesday hosting #5 Wheaton in the game to watch.

Augustana 5-0-2

The Viking had two draws on their Iowa swing this week, but bounced back with a 3-0 win at St Marys (IN).

Adrian 5-2-2

The Bulldogs tied Otterbein 3-3 in a game that had five goals after half time. What a spectacle! Adrian scored in the 85th and 89th minutes to earn the draw and carried a 23-15 shot advantage.
