Midwest News & Roundup - Week 6

Welcome to the Midwest News & Review. I will highlight women's NCAA D3 soccer games in the Midwest area. National importance will be followed by regional importance, and towards the end of the season, conference considerations will crop up. Time is limited, so I exercise judgment on notable games to report each week. My editors make me look good; thank you.

Week 6 Notes

Jim Conlon picked up his 200th win at WashU, sporting a 200-37-17 (.821) in 12 seasons.

NORTH REGION

No undefeated or unbeaten teams remain. The top teams are beating each other up, dropping the chances of an at-large bid if they don’t win their respective conference AQs.

#17 St. Thomas 7-2-1

The Tommies struggled against Wartburg in what ended in a 0-0 tie where the shots on target did not favor them 6-3. They played Bethel a day late after the game was postponed. It resulted in a hard fought 2OT victory 2-1 despite outshooting the Royals 24-8.

RV Wartburg 7-1-3

The Knights drew 2-2 versus Simpson and 0-0 against St Thomas. Both games were on the road. They returned home with a 7-0 thrashing of Buena Vista. Next week is tough with a game on October 9 against Dubuque and on the 12th against Nebraska Wesleyan.

UW-Stevens Point 7-2-2

The Pointers only had one game. It was a 5-0 win against UW-Stout. Now the WIAC schedule is underway.

Loras 8-3-0

The Duhawks Beat Central 3-1. No news on when their match up with UW-Stevens Point is going to be rescheduled.

Nebraska Wesleyan 10-1-0

The Prairie Wolves got by Dubuque 1-0 in a game where the official scorer only awarded six total shots. They play Wartburg on October 12 in another challenge.

Dubuque 8-3-0

The Spartans lost to Nebraska Wesleyan in a defensive battle 1-0.

Monmouth 9-2-1

The Scots took down Simpson 2-1 in a relatively even game on the shot chart 11-13. They were upset by Cornell later in the week 3-0 where shots on target were 6-7, but the Rams were efficient.

GREAT LAKES REGION

Some coverage this week of the Great Lakes added by Managing Editor Jim Hutchinson. Pitt-Greensburg is one one eleven unbeaten women’s sides and one of five with perfect records.

Light schedules across the Region as most sides had only a single contest as they gear up for conference play.

The top eight in the USC Great Lakes ranking were 7-1-0 on the week, but there will be new entries at the bottom as positions 9 and 10 were 0-3-1 in Week 6.

Case Western Reserve (9-1-0) No. 15 National; No. 1 Region

0-1 (2OT) loss to New York University. The Spartans fell in their UAA opener to NYU when the Violets converted a PK in the second overtime.

Otterbein (8-1-1) RV National; No. 2 Region

Road 4-1 win over Mount Union. Cardinals scoring in bunches including a 4-5 Week 5 loss to Kenyon when the Ladies put five on eight shots in the net.

Ohio Northern (7-2-2) RV National; No. 3 Region

Polar Bears dominant in their OAC opener with a 5-0 downing of Marietta at home.

Carnegie Mellon (7-2-1) No. 4 Region

CMU 1, Brandeis 0 …Tartans make an early fifth-minute goal stand in a tight affair: Shots (SoG) 11(6)-(9-6); CK 5-2.

Capital (8-3-0) No.5 Region

Capital 4, Baldwin Wallace 1. Crusaders off to good start as OAC play opens; OAC title likely to be settled late in the season as Capital, Ohio Northern, and Otterbein all meet.

Wooster (7-1-2) No. 6 Region

2-0 road win at Muskingum; scoreless draw with visiting DePauw. Scots back on track after 0-5 thumping by Otterbein in Week 5

Pitt-Greensburg (11-0-0) No. 7 Region

Bobcats stay perfect with two 2-0 home wins on the week topping Juniata and D’Youville.

Denison (5-4-3) No. 8 Region

3-0 at Allegheny to open their NCAC conference schedule. The Big Red have played one of D-III’s more challenging non-conference schedules

CENTRAL REGION

No undefeated or unbeaten teams remain.

#6 Washington U. 10-1-1

The Bears won both games on the week. In their first UAA game, against Rochester, all the goals came in a 24 minute span of the second half. The Bears won Conlon's 200th game at WashU 3-1 in a come from behind win.

#9 Wheaton (Ill.) 10-1-1

The Thunder outshot Hope 19-6 and only won 3-2 in come from behind fashion in the second half. They were also up a player for 67 minutes after a Flying Dutch red card in the 33rd minute. They then beat Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 by forcing an own goal in the 28th minute of a dominating performance.

#12 Chicago 7-1-1

The Maroons held off Emory 2-1. They scored both goals early and were outshot overall 17(12)-14(6), but Emory didn't score till the 80th minute leaving time too short to complete the comeback. The game against Hope on October 10 has been canceled hard to say if that hurts or helps their strength of schedule – strange to say that after the excellent run Hope has had over the past two seasons.

RV Illinois Wesleyan 5-5-0

The Titans received votes last week, presumably off reputation? They lost to Wheaton (Ill.) 1-0 on an own goal but were outshot 17(13) to 5(2) in their only game this week.

Augustana 7-1-2

The Vikings lost to North Central (Ill) 1-0 and beat Carroll 1-0 this week. They outshot North Central (Ill.) 9-2 in shots on target in a loss. Against Carroll, they had only a 6-5 shots on goal advantage and won. Soccer. They play Wheaton (Ill.) on October 12 in a game to watch.

Adrian 8-3-2

The Bulldogs won both games on the week. They face Hope in a couple of weeks in a rematch of last year's MIAA title game.

Concordia (Wis.) 10-1-0

The Falcons rolled in both games this week in the NACC.

Dominican 9-1-0

The Stars won even bigger than CUW this week. They meet each other on October 26 in what should determine the NACC #1 seed.
