Midwest News & Roundup - Week 5

Welcome to the Midwest News & Review. I will highlight women's NCAA D3 soccer games in the Midwest area. National importance will by followed by regional importance and towards the end of the season conference considerations will crop up. Time is limited, so I exercise judgment on notable games to report each week. My editors make me look good; thank you.

Week 5 Notes

NORTH REGION

And then there were two unbeaten teams remaining out of 50 in the North Region after five weeks. Bethel (8-0-0) have a date with No.12 St. Thomas on October 5 in a game to watch. Simpson (5-0-4) has a date with Monmouth (8-1-1) this Wednesday.

#12 St. Thomas 6-2-0

The Tommies went 1-1 this week. They lost to a rising Augsburg team 1-0 in the classic tale of two halves. The Auggies scored 13 minutes in and were up 8-4 on shots and 5-0 on corner kicks. In the second half, the Tommies fought hard with a 13-5 shot advantage and 7-0 on corner kicks but were not able to come back in the rematch of 2018's MIAC title game. They bounced back with a victory over St. Olaf 6-0. They host Wartburg on October 2nd and play at Bethel on October 5 in games to watch.

#23 Wartburg 6-1-2

The Knights had a single game against unbeaten Simpson this week in their first ARC conference game. Simpson remained unbeaten at 6-0-4 as the two teams drew at two apiece in a game where the Knights had a 20-4 shot advantage. They are at St. Thomas on October 2nd in a game to watch.

#34 UW-Stevens Point 6-2-2

The Pointers only played one game on the week as their game with Loras was postponed - their second match of the season to be postponed. Saturday's game against Illinois Wesleyan ended in a loss as goals in the 67th and 69th minutes gave the Titans a 2-0 win.

Loras 7-3-0

The Duhawks won both games they played this week to recover from three straight losses. Their game of the week at UW-Stevens Point was postponed.

Dubuque 7-2-0

The Spartans won their only contest of the week 11-1. This week they have a game to watch hosting Nebraska Wesleyan on October 5.

Nebraska Wesleyan 9-1-0

The Prairie Wolves only loss has been to UW-Stevens Point 1-0. They have scheduled well, but are now coming up on the meat of the ARC conference season.

Monmouth 8-1-1

The Scots are another team with a favorable nonconference schedule. They are at Simpson (6-0-4) on October 2 in a game to watch.

GREAT LAKES REGION

CENTRAL REGION

Augustana (6-0-2) is the lone unbeaten team in the Central Region as Concordia (Wis.) (7-1-0) was downed 1-0 by UW-Whitewater (5-4-2). CUW was outshot 20-10 in the game.

#6 Washington U. 8-1-1

The Bears had two 2-0 victories on the week out shooting Fontbonne 23-2 and Webster 31-7. They have one nonconference game left and then hit the UAA schedule.

#8 Wheaton (Ill.) 8-1-1

The Thunder had another big test this week traveling to the University of Chicago. The game was a tie 1-1 with Thunder scoring in the 77th minute, the Maroons in the 79th minute, and a Thunder red card in the 80th. They were outshot 22-13 on the game but survived overtime to earn the draw. With the grueling nonconference schedule almost behind them, one game remaining at Hope on October 1, the conference schedule must come as a relief.

#15 Chicago 6-1-1

The Maroons outshot the Thunder 22-13 and played up a player for the final 30 minutes including overtime and came away with a 1-1 draw. They beat Calvin 4-0. The UAA schedule starts by hosting Emory on October 5.

Augustana 6-0-2

The Vikings beat North Park 2-1 in their first CCIW conference match and their only game of the week. They play at North Central (Ill) on Oct 2 in what should be a good contest this week.

Adrian 6-3-2

The Bulldogs lost 4-1 to Capital Saturday and rebounded with an 8-0 staking of Transylvania. The MIAA conference schedule starts next.

Dominican 8-1-0

The Stars made the NCAA tournament last year and look like they can run the table in conference till the end of October when they face Concordia (Wis.).
