Men

When Heidelberg beat conference leader Ohio Northern 2-0 on Tuesday it opened the door for John Carroll to catch the Polar Bears in the standings and the Blue Streaks did just that with a 2-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace (4-11-3/1-5-1), their fifth conference win in a row after opening with a loss to Ohio Northern.

However, John Carroll's stay at the top was short-lived as their lack of finishing against Capital on Saturday—of 25 shots, only five on goal and one score—cost them full points in an overtime loss. Whether deserving winners or not, the Crusaders (7-8-1/5-1-1), who went 2-7-0 in non-conference play, moved ahead John Carroll (10-4-1/5-2-0) in the standings and into position for a bye in the six-team conference tournament.

Ohio Northern (14-4-0/6-1-0) bounced back from their midweek loss with a dominating 4-0 whitewash of Muskingum (4-12-0/1-6-0), eliminating the Muskies from playoff contention. Heidelberg (6-7-4/4-2-1) was unable to clinch a playoff spot when they were matched 1-1 by Marietta (8-8-1/3-3-1) who currently hold the final postseason ticket just ahead of Mount Union (8-6-1/3-4-0). That result meant Otterbein (8-5-3/3-2-2) had a chance to move up to fourth, but they too could only manage a draw with Baldwin Wallace (4-11-3/1-5-1) who desperately needed a win to stay alive in the playoff race.

Athlete of the Week: M - Jesse Marinaro (So.) - John Carroll

Women

Capital (11-4-0/7-0-0) kept their crusade to the conference #1 seed perfect with a pair of wins. Ohio Northern (10/6-1/6-1-0) remains just one game back of the leaders by scoring 11 goals and allowing just one in their two Week 8 wins.

Otterbein (8-6-1/4-2-1) took sole possession of third place when they won midweek and Baldwin Wallace (9-4-5/3-1-3) was tied by John Carroll. The two locked horns Saturday and played to a competitive 1-1 stalemate to stay three-four in the playoff race. Mount Union (8-8-0/4-3-0) and Heidelberg (8-9-0/3-4-0) currently hold the final post-season tickets, but Wilmington (8-7-1/2-4-1) and John Carroll (4-11-2/2-4-1) will still have a say in that with two game days remaining.

Athlete of the Week: F - Shelby Stephens (Jr.) - Ohio Northern

In select midweek matches, Rose-Hulman (10-2-4/5-0-2) downed Earlham (7-6-1/4-2-1) 4-0; Hanover (10-6-1/6-0-1) scored with 35 seconds remaining to draw even with Franklin (6-8-2/3-3-1) and then earned the victory in the second overtime 2-1. Transylvania (7-3-6/4-1-2) moved up the standings by earning their first of two shutout victories on the week defeating Mount St. Joseph (6-9-1/0-6-1) 3-0.

Hanover, in their second double overtime contest of the week, came back from down 2-0 to draw Rose-Hulman at 2-2 in a key match for both. With the result, Hanover stays on top of the table with Rose-Hulman just two points back with two matches remaining. Transylvania gained another shutout on Saturday 5-0 over Bluffton (0-13-2/0-5-2). Earlham gained a point in a scoreless draw with Manchester (4-7-5/1-3-3).

Hanover and Rose-Hulman have clinched HCAC tournament berths. Manchester, Bluffton and Mount St. Joseph have been eliminated while five teams remain in the hunt for the final two spots led by Transylvania and Earlham in third and fourth respectively. Matches to highlight will be a mid week contest between Hanover and Transylvania featuring the first and third place teams. Also a Franklin - Earlham contest on the last day of the regular season may be for the final tournament seed.

Player of the Week: F - Ben Lyon (Jr.) - Rose-Hulman

Women

Hanover (11-5-0/6-1-0) downed Franklin (13-2-0/6-1-0) 3-0 to regain a share of the conference lead. Mount St. Joseph (9-5-2/4-2-1) gained ground with a 3-1 win over Transylvania (6-7-2/4-2-1) while Manchester (5-9-1/3-3-1) downed Anderson (7-7-0/3-4-0) 3-2 in another contest with seeding implications.

On the weekend Hanover, 2-0 over Rose-Hulman (7-9-0/3-4-0), Mount St. Joseph 3-0 against Defiance (2-14-0/1-6-0) and Manchester downing Anderson 4-3 each completed 2-0-0 weeks improving their tournament opportunities.

Hanover and Franklin are tied for the conference lead and have clinched spots in the HCAC tournament. Six teams are in the hunt for the last two seeds with only Defiance and Earlham out of contention. Transylvania and Mount St. Joseph are three points clear of the rest of the field with two matches to play.

Player of the Week: F - Morgan Knasel (So.) - Mount St. Joseph
