Midwest Roundup - Week 7
By D3soccer.com Contributor
Hard to believe, but the 2017 Division III Men’s Soccer regular season is quickly coming to a close, with just a few weeks of matches remaining. As the final weeks of conference play come upon us, teams are making their finishing pushes towards conference tournament seedings. A tour around the Midwest reveals continued excitement throughout every conference as the action has really heated up in October.
Kentucky
Transylvania (11-1-0 / 4-1-0) was the last undefeated team standing in the region until Manchester (6-8-0 / 2-3-0) handed them their first loss in double overtime on Saturday. Earlier in the week the Pioneers downed Hanover by a shutout. The Pioneers are in a three-way tie with Hanover (9-4-0 / 4-1-0) and Rose-Hulman (9-4-1 / 4-1-0) for first place in the HCAC.
Centre (7-4-2 / 3-0-2)) are unbeaten in conference play, having picked up wins against Rhodes and Hendrix this past weekend. Jeb Burch and the Colonels are third in the SAA standings behind Oglethorpe (11-2-1 / 5-0-1) and Sewanee (8-6-0 / 4-0-2) with a game in hand over both.
Illinois
Chicago (13-1-0 / 3-1-0) went to work after suffering their first loss. This week the D3soccer.com No. 4 Chicago Maroons won their matches against No. 20 Carnegie Mellon (9-3-1 / 2-2-0), 3-0, and Case Western Reserve (5-7-2 / 1-3-0), 2-1, bouncing back in impressive fashion.
Knox (10-2-3 / 5-0-0) has won all five of their conference games, sitting at second place overall in the MWC trailing St. Norbert (12-3-1 / 7-0-0). The Prairie Fire have only allowed one goal in their five conference wins.
Ohio
Kenyon (10-2-2 / 5-0-0) is on a hot winning streak of six games. They shut out both Wooster (6-8-0 / 1-4-0) and Hiram (4-9-0 / 2-3-0) during the week. The undefeated Kenyon Lords top the NCAC table. Up next is a match with the conference’s current second place resident, Ohio Wesleyan (8-5-1 / 4-0-1).
Otterbein (11-2-0 / 5—0-0)) extended their winning streak to nine games this week. The Cardinals defeated Wilmington (7-6-2 / 1-3-1) and No. 8 (United Soccer Coaches) Heidelberg (9-2-1 / 2-2-1) to improve their unblemished trip through their OAC schedule. The last time the Cardinals won five games in OAC play was in 2004.
Indiana
Rose-Hulman (9-4-1 / 4-1-0) outscored (8-6-1 / 3-2-0), 2-1, and Defiance (6-6-2 / 2-3-0), 1-0. The Rose-Hulman Engineers look to break the three-way tie in the HCAC on Wednesday as they play Mount St. Joseph (5-7-3 / 2-2-1).
Missouri
Webster (9-4-2 / 4-0-1) sits at the top of the SLIAC after their busy week. The Gorloks won their matches against non-conference Finlandia (6-7-0) before knocking off Westminster (Mo.) (4-8-1 / 3-2-0) and MacMurray (1-12-1 / 1-4-0) in two shutout wins.
This week’s games will play a major role in how the conference standings finish and who gets a chance to play for a conference tournament title in November. Keep an eye out for results this week.
