Midwest Roundup - Week 2
By D3soccer.com Contributor
The second weekend of the regular season is officially in the books, with another heavy schedule over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Most teams have played at least three contests at this point, while some have even enjoyed six competitive games.
The opening weekend nerves should officially be behind teams at this point, and we saw some exciting results from across the Midwest. Let’s take a look at some of the action in various states:
INDIANA
Lots of games in the Hoosier state! Hanover (3-1-0) picked up three straight wins, including a 4-1 triumph over nationally-ranked Carthage. The Panthers and head coach Matt Wilkerson rebounded quickly from their opening weekend loss at DePauw.
DePauw remains unbeaten at 2-0-2, picking up a solid 2-1 win over Case Western on Saturday. Coach Brad Hauter and the Tigers were led by Julian Gonzalez’s goal and assist in that important 2-1 victory.
KENTUCKY
Centre is a perfect 4-0-0 for the first time since 2007, picking up a pair of big wins in their 27th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic. After a thrilling 3-2 win over Heidelberg on Friday night, the Colonels knocked off nationally-ranked Thomas More in a 3-0 win. GK Bailey Spade has three shutouts in four games for Jeb Burch’s side.
Transylvania also continued their hot streak, beating Trine and Alma in a pair of shutout victories. At 3-0-1 overall, coach Matt Vogel’s team has not allowed a single goal this season.
MISSOURI
After a 1-1-0 opening weekend, the Blue Jays of Westminster (Mo.) earned a pair of nice wins at the Volgas Memorial Tournament in Memphis, TN. They beat a pair of SAA teams in Rhodes and Hendrix and look to be picking up steam approaching conference play in head coach Adam Galla’s first year.
OHIO
Ohio Northern is off to an incredible 6-0-0 start. The Polar Bears biggest wins came over Oberlin, Olivet, Wittenberg and Albion to open the season. The team has 22 goals – enough for 3.67 per game – and is led by David Janusz’s five goals and Matt Kinkopf’s seven assists.
TENNESSEE
Maryville (Tenn.) has opened the season with three wins out of four games, including two shutout victories this past week. In his 28th season, coach Pepe Fernandez shutout Millsaps in a 5-0 win and beat Belhaven in a 4-2 contest on Friday and Saturday. The Scots begin conference play this week.
ILLINOIS
Through five tough games, Elmhurst has remained unbeaten with a 3-0-2 overall record. A 2-0 win over Kalamazoo stands out above the rest, and given the Bluejays have only surrendered one goal this fall, head coach Dave Di Tomasso should be pleased with their early season form.
Down the road in the Windy City, Chicago is off to a perfect 4-0 start, including wins vs Dominican (Ill.), Texas-Dallas, Knox, and North Park. Coming off NCAA Tournament heartbreak in 2015, the Maroons are showing extremely well after the opening two weeks.
Lots of action is still to come as some teams are already beginning to enter conference play already in mid-September. The season goes by fast! And with just a few games left to fine tune before it all really matters, this next week’s slate of games should prove to be telling of what we can begin to expect in November.
