Midwest Roundup - Week 4
By Jordan Vejar
Week four in NCAA Division III soccer showed a lot of promise for the region! Teams are starting to solidify their place as one of the region’s top contenders while conference play is beginning very soon.
ILLINOIS
Chicago (3-0-4) won a massive game against No.9 Loras this past Friday as they came away with a 2-1 victory on the road. While the Maroons record may not reflect a lot of wins they do remain undefeated on the year with three wins over top 25 teams and two of those coming on the road. Coach Flinn and his squad face a tough test as they travel to Calvin midweek and then host Kalamazoo at home to finish the week. The Maroons have shown they can maintain good form against some of the top teams in the country thus far.
OHIO
Ohio Northern (6-2-1) extended their win streak to five games this past week knocking off two Heartland Conference members, Hanover College and Rose-Hulman. The Polar Bears have also shut out all of the last five opponents they have played, which gives the entire squad more confidence as a unit. The team will face a pair of Michigan teams this week, Adrian and Alma. Coach Matejka and his squad will look to continue their momentum heading towards the final week of September.
KENTUCKY
Centre (6-2-1) bounced back this past week after defeating Transylvania on the road 1-0 and Depauw at home 2-0. The shutout victories give the Colonels some good confidence heading into their conference opener vs. Oglethorpe where the Colonels will travel to Atlanta for the contest.
Spalding (6-2-1) regained their winning ways after two dominant wins over Franklin College and Earlham College this past week. The Golden Eagles scored 12 combined goals over both games with two players notching hat tricks. Coach Boyer and his side look to maintain their form on both sides of the ball this week as they face their last non-conference opponent, Hanover College, on Friday at home.
INDIANA
DePauw (5-2-0) handed Rose-Hulman their first loss of the season in double overtime last Wednesday in a tough battle between in-state rivals. The Tigers then fell to Centre College on the road that snapped their five-game winning streak. However, Coach Hauter and his squad will not let only their second loss on the season derail their momentum. The Tigers will hit the road to play Milikin on Wednesday then finish out the week at home against Oberlin in their conference opener.
IOWA
Central (8-0-1) may have had their winning streak snapped but the undefeated season is still alive for the program. The Dutch tied a very hot Knox College side during their mid-week contest and capped off the week with a 3-1 victory over Monmouth. Coach Laidlaw and his squad will face their last non-conference opponent, Carleton, on Tuesday before kicking off ARC Conference play against Luther on Saturday.
MICHIGAN
No. 8 Calvin (8-1-0) extended their winning streak to seven games as they shutout Carthage and Greenville this past week. The Knights tallied nine goals in two games and allowed none. Coach Souders and his team will face Chicago and Manchester this week as they look to maintain their current regional dominance and national recognition.
